IAAS at UNEA6: Youth Voices Leading Global Environmental Action

The United Nations Environment Assembly's 6th session (UNEA6), held from February 25 to March 2, 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya, marked a significant milestone in global environmental governance. The event brought together world leaders, environmentalists, youth representatives, and civil society organizations, all united by a common goal: addressing the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

Opening Ceremony: A Call to Action

The opening ceremony set the tone for the week-long assembly, with the UNEA6 President emphasizing the urgency of the moment. He reminded attendees that since its inception in 2012, UNEA has been a powerful and inclusive platform for environmental decision-making. However, time is running out. The planet is facing unprecedented challenges, with 2023 recording the highest temperatures in history, thousands of species on the brink of extinction, and millions of hectares of land degraded.

In his address, the President called for immediate and committed action. "We have one planet and one Earth," he said, urging delegates to focus on solutions that transcend political differences and prioritize the health of our little blue planet. His words resonated throughout the assembly, echoing the global sentiment that we must act now to secure a sustainable future.

UNEA6 Resolutions and Decisions: A Roadmap for Change

UNEA6 concluded with the adoption of 15 resolutions, two decisions, and a ministerial declaration. These outcomes are aimed at halting the progression of the triple planetary crises. The resolutions covered a wide range of environmental issues, from pollution control to biodiversity conservation, and the decisions made will shape global environmental policy for years to come.
The assembly's outcomes are not just words on paper; they represent a commitment to real, impactful change. UNEA6's resolutions and decisions are designed to bring about tangible improvements in environmental health and justice, ensuring a peaceful, equitable, and sustainable future for all.

Youth Engagement: IAAS at UNEA6

One of the most inspiring aspects of UNEA6 was the active participation of youth delegates. Representing the International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences (IAAS), the young leaders played a crucial role in partnership and organized a standout event "Beyond Boundaries: Unlocking Synergy in Africa's Water-Energy-Food Ecosystems Nexus," with partners. The event attracted over 80 participants and featured five distinguished speakers. It underscored the interconnectedness of environmental issues and the need for integrated solutions.

Building Partnerships and Collaborations

UNEA6 was not just about high-level discussions but also a platform for forging new partnerships and collaborations. IAAS delegates actively, explore opportunities for IAAS and other youth organizations to collaborate with global environmental movements. Key meetings included discussions with the Climate Governance Movement (CGM), IFSA, CYMG, CA4SH, and UN bodies focused on policy and governance education. These meetings resulted in promising collaborations that will extend the impact of youth-led initiatives in environmental governance.

The Road Ahead: A Commitment to Action

As UNEA6 drew to a close, there was a palpable sense of urgency and determination among the delegates. The world is watching, and the decisions made in Nairobi will have far-reaching implications. UNEA6 has set a high standard for environmental action, and it is now up to the global community to follow through on these commitments.

For young leaders, UNEA6 was not just an event but a call to action. The assembly highlighted the critical role that youth can play in shaping a sustainable future. The collaborations and partnerships formed during UNEA6 will be instrumental in driving the agenda for environmental justice and climate solutions.

As we look to the future, it is clear that the work of UNEA6 is just beginning. The resolutions and decisions made in Nairobi provide a roadmap for change, but it is the collective action of governments, civil society, and individuals that will determine whether we can achieve a peaceful, equitable, and sustainable future. The time to act is now, and together, we can make a difference.
